SACRAMENTO, CA - With up to five days of stormy weather forecasted for the week, meteorologists and emergency preparedness professionals urge Californians to be prepared in the event of power outages, flooding and other weather-related damage.

Of especial concern is heavy rain causing mud and debris flows on burn-scarred areas of Butte, Shasta and Plumas counties. Urban and small stream and creek flooding and later weir overflow is expected. And gusty winds could knock down trees onto power lines anywhere, according to the National Weather Service.

Be ready with:

- At least a three-day supply of food and water for each family member

- First aid supplies and medicines, as well as cash

- Battery-operated radios and flashlights

- Extra batteries and a manual can opener

Have an emergency plan with:

- The name and phone number of out-of-town contacts

- Safe routes from your home or business to higher ground

- A place to reunite if you and family members are separated

- Considerations for family members with access and functional needs (i.e. those who use wheelchairs or breathing apparatus)

Use radio and television to keep aware of weather and road conditions.

If not already done, clear gutters and storm drains of leaves and debris. Trees should be trimmed. And steer clear of downed power lines.
