PENRYN, CA - A Live Oak man was killed in a head-on collision near Sierra College Boulevard in Penryn Wednesday morning.

Placer County sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin said the victim was 53-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez.

The California Highway Patrol called to the crash scene just north of English Colony Road around 6:31 a.m.

According to the Officer Dave Martinez, a driver, later identified as 43-year-old Andrey Yushchuk of Lincoln, was behnd the wheel of a beige Nissan Quest on northbound Sierra College when the mini-van crossed over the double yellow lines and crashed head-on into Rodriguez' silver Nissan Quest in the southbound lanes.

The impact sent the silver Nissan Quest spinning and hitting a Chevrolet pick-up head-on, Martinez said. The driver of the pick-up wasn't hurt.

Rodriguez died at the scene.

Yushchuk was taken by air ambulance to Sutter Roseville Hospital with major injuries, Martinez said. Yushchuk was also placed under arrest at the hospital on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Sierra College Boulevard was closed at Woodside Court for two hours for the investigation and clean-up effort.
